My first 2 years here I'd call people at their homes and leave a message, expecting a call back. Sometimes I'd get a call back, most times I'd have to call again two or three days later. I just thought people didn't want to talk to me.

The cause was actually that people aren't using their home phones much any more! Once I got a "real" cell phone plan I suddenly was able to connect with all these people who only have a land-line out of habit (rather than actually use it). My parents have even dropped their land-line (a number which hasn't changed in over 30 years) in favor of cell-phones.

Convergence devices muddy the waters even more. It's not just a phone - it's a portal into the broader world. However, people will be spending less time sitting at a keyboard too. It's not a wash - just a thought that the reality that's coming isn't going to fit in the categories of "on-off" that we used to hold (as you found out). Turning "off" is no longer a temporary disconnect - it's a moment of some kind of almost monastic discipline.
